Interrogatio - Hexenwaage

Susanna is the name of a maid who was seen driving a carriage from the forbidden direction back to the village at night. In court she denies it, although the executioner himself is an eyewitness. Suddenly Janne, the maid's mistress, appears in the courtroom and claims that she herself did it and that the witness was mistaken. The testimonies of the women contradict each other and so both are suspected of witchcraft at the same time. For three days they languish in the dark pit until the embarrassing cross-examination begins. Janne is fixed on the thorn-covered witch's chair, while Susanna is raised and stroked with the rod. But the harshest punishments the women endure are when their guilt is weighed on the witch's scales....
